Research and Planning: Ancillary Products

Research and Planning: Music Permission

As part of my research and planning, I thought about the music I wanted to use in my trailer. From the questionnaire I did, I found out that my target market (of teenage girls) prefers the use of one song throughout a trailer as it creates an easily recognisable brand around the film. Also the most popular genre of music within my target audience was pop, I wanted to relate this to my idea of a feminist coming-of-age drama. To do so I began to think about popular songs that would convey teenage angst but not come across as too stereotypical or punk.

I decided that I wanted to use the song 'You Don't Own Me' sung originally by Lesley Gore and written by John Madara and Dave White. Initially I sent over a request to Warner/Chappel Music for a Synch license for the song. After not hearing back from them I did research into the two writers and saw that Madara had a website of his own. I contacted him through an email address on the website and he has allowed me to use the song as long as it is for non-profit purposes, as the email above shows.
